Smoked Salmon Miso Soup Recipe: A Fusion of Japanese Flavors

Smoked salmon miso soup is a delightful fusion of flavors that combines the traditional elements of Japanese miso soup with the rich, smoky taste of salmon. This soup is warm, comforting, and packed with umami, making it a perfect dish for a light meal or appetizer. Here’s how you can make a delicious smoked salmon miso soup.

Smoked Salmon Miso Soup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 cups dashi broth (can substitute with vegetable broth if needed)
  • 3 tablespoons white miso paste
  • 4 ounces smoked salmon (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1/2 cup tofu (firm, cut into small cubes)
  • 1/2 cup shiitake mushrooms (sliced)
  • 1/2 cup baby spinach (roughly chopped)
  • 2 green onions (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon wakame seaweed (dried, rehydrated in water, and drained)
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Broth

In a medium saucepan, bring the dashi broth (or vegetable broth) to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Add the grated ginger and soy sauce for added flavor.

2. Add the Mushrooms and Tofu

Add the sliced shiitake mushrooms and tofu cubes to the broth. Let them simmer for about 5 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender.

3. Incorporate the Miso Paste

  1. In a small bowl, add the miso paste and a ladleful of the hot broth. Whisk until the miso paste is fully dissolved and smooth.
  2. Pour the miso mixture back into the pot and stir well. Reduce the heat to low to avoid boiling, as high heat can destroy the beneficial probiotics in miso.

4. Add the Smoked Salmon and Wakame

Add the smoked salmon pieces, rehydrated wakame seaweed, and baby spinach to the pot. Stir gently and let simmer for another 2-3 minutes until the spinach wilts and the salmon is warmed through.

5. Finish with Green Onions and Sesame Oil

Stir in the sliced green onions and sesame oil. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more soy sauce or chili flakes for additional flavor.

6. Serve

Ladle the smoked salmon miso soup into bowls and garnish with sesame seeds and additional green onions if desired. Serve hot with a side of steamed rice or a light salad.

Tips

  • Miso Variations: Use red or mixed miso for a different depth of flavor if you prefer a stronger taste.
  • Vegetable Add-ins: Feel free to add other vegetables like bok choy, carrots, or daikon radish for extra texture and flavor.
  • Customize the Heat: For a spicy kick, add more chili flakes or a dash of hot chili oil.
